With 257.5 feet of main boom, the Grove GMK5250XL-1 gives Vice Construction the reach and control needed for coastal utility work.
From Storm Recovery to Steady Lifts
Nearly 50 years after Hurricane Frederic tore through coastal Mississippi, Vice Construction is still helping the region rebuild and grow. The Moss Point-based company was founded in 1979 by Diane and Jimmy Vice, who began their business in the storm’ s aftermath to support utility and transmission work across the Gulf Coast. Today, their sons, Lee and Jereamy, continue that mission with the same hands-on approach.
Working along the coast often means contending with soft ground, tight spaces and unpredictable weather. To meet those challenges, Vice Construction recently added a preowned Grove GMK5250XL-1 to its fleet. Purchased through Jeff Martin Auctioneers, the 300-ton all-terrain crane has already taken on several tough assignments.
“ We’ ve been doing this work for nearly 50 years, and we know what kind of crane we need to get the job done efficiently,” said Jimmy Vice, vice president of Vice Construction.“ We’ re often working in tough spots— live substations, soft ground, remote locations— and this crane handles it all.”
The crane has lifted 75-ton transformers inside live substations, replaced 100-foot transmission poles and even moved rail engines for a local railroad. Its 257.5-foot main boom and 58.4-foot swingaway extension give it the reach needed for utility work, while its single-engine design and mobility keep operations moving smoothly.
“ We’ ve used Manitowoc and Grove cranes for decades, and this newest addition is already proving its worth,” said Jereamy Vice.“ It’ s reliable, easy to move and lets us get on and off the jobsite quickly.”
