CP & A Oversees Commissioning of New Ship-to-Shore Cranes at GCT
Casper, Phillips & Associates Inc.( CP & A) has overseen the commissioning of two new ship-to-shore container cranes at GCT Deltaport in Delta, British Columbia. The units, manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.( ZPMC), are the first of six identical cranes ordered for the Canadian terminal.
CP & A’ s initial role was advising on the largest cranes that could be installed at the dock to accommodate the biggest container ships. The firm also performed a structural and mechanical design review of ZPMC’ s engineering for compliance with specifications, while GCT engineers managed electrical and control systems.
Each crane features a rated load of 65 tons, a 70-meter( 229.7-foot) outreach, a 52-meter( 170.6-foot) lift height and a 30.48-meter( 100-foot) rail gauge. The remote-operation-ready cranes include a ship profiling system to prevent collisions with containers and a chassis alignment program that scans trailer positions to help truck drivers with accurate placement.
GCT Deltaport, Canada’ s flagship container terminal, operates on 210 acres with a 3,609-foot berth and more than 27,00 feet of dock rail, typically having over 18,000 containers stacked on site at a given time.
CP & A also recently contributed to the development of a Site Wind Analysis and Monitor( SWAM) program for GCT, which uses anemometers and forecasting technology to monitor wind conditions.
WireCo Launches Gladiator Shield Protection System for Mining Hoist Ropes
WireCo has introduced the UNION Gladiator Shield, a patent-pending protection system designed to extend the life of shovel hoist ropes in surface mining operations by reducing rock damage and abrasion.
The Gladiator Shield is applied to the rope section directly above the dipper, an area frequently exposed to falling debris during loading. The system is available in diameters from 2-1 / 4 inches to 2-7 / 8 inches and is compatible with WireCo’ s Tuf Max and Gladiator Hoist Ropes. By defending the polymer and outer wires,
Caterpillar Introduces Cat C32B Engine for Heavy Lifting Applications
the Shield helps extend rope service life and reduce unplanned outages.
Field trials at a U. S. mine using UNION Gladiator Hoist Rope showed improved performance in the spans protected by the Shield, supporting longer rope life and more reliable shovel operation. With shovel downtime estimated at $ 22,000 per hour and hoist rope sets costing $ 20,000 to $ 30,000, the system represents an investment that can pay for itself in less than an hour of avoided downtime.
The system was developed following on-site evaluations that identified recurring rope damage at the dipper interface. Some operators once used sheet metal wraps or clamps to protect the rope, but WireCo’ s factory-installed option offers a faster and safer alternative.
Now at the patent-published stage in the U. S., WireCo is exploring additional applications for the Gladiator Shield technology in areas of shovels and draglines subject to high abrasion.
Caterpillar has unveiled the Cat C32B diesel engine, a re-engineered power platform designed to deliver higher power density and improved durability for large off-highway equipment, including cranes.
The 32.1-liter, 12-cylinder engine is now available at Cat dealers worldwide. It offers up to 1,200 horsepower( hp)( 895 kilowatts) and 4,323 pound-feet( 5,861 newton-meters) of torque for U. S. EPA Tier 4 Final, and 1,125 hp( 839 kW) with 4,056 pound-feet( 5,499 newton-meters) for European Union Stage V. In less regulated territories, it delivers a peak rating of 1,350 hp( 1,007 kW) and 4,548 pound-feet( 6,166 newton-meters).
Updates to the C32B include a stronger cast-iron block, induction-hardened crankshaft, larger bearing journals, an upgraded lubrication system and redesigned cylinder head components. The improvements enhance engine reliability and extend rebuild intervals, supporting demanding lifting operations.
The C32B also features a dual-can diesel oxidation catalyst( DOC) aftertreatment system designed to reduce operating costs by eliminating diesel exhaust fluid( DEF) requirements. Flexible mounting options simplify installation for OEMs.
