Boldt Construction and Manitowoc Upgrade Minnesota Dam
Boldt Construction, in partnership with Dakota County and Xcel Energy, has successfully upgraded the historic Lake Byllesby Dam in Minnesota, doubling its electricity generation capacity from 2.2 megawatts to 4.4 megawatts. The project involved constructing a new powerhouse and installing two generators capable of powering approximately 2,400 homes, utilizing two Manitowoc crawler cranes: a 2250 owned by Boldt and an MLC300 VPC-MAX rented from Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental.
The hydroelectric upgrade, which began in spring 2021, faced challenges due to the aging concrete structure and water exposure. Over 1.7 million pounds of concrete were removed to lay the foundation for the new powerhouse, requiring meticulous planning and execution.
The Manitowoc 2250 played a crucial role in handling materials throughout construction, while the MLC300 VPC-MAX was used to install the new generators, each weighing over 121,000 pounds. Boldt’ s in-house technical team collaborated with engineers flown in from India to ensure a smooth installation process.
“ The generators and cranes were positioned at a lay-down site near the pump house,” explained Aaron Utley, project manager at Boldt.“ Our crews guided the generators into place while the engineer ensured all connections were secure. Installing each generator took several hours, with the second placed shortly after the first. After completing the lifts, we focused on finalizing any remaining connections and tasks. Our teams were excited and eager to make it all happen.”
