Closing the Empathy Gap
Men’ s Health Month is part of an ongoing international effort to educate men, boys and their families about receiving regular disease prevention screenings and living healthier lifestyles.
The life expectancy for men nationwide averages five years fewer than that of women. Men experience higher rates of health problems such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease and premature mortality.
National Men’ s Health Month theme this year is“ Closing the Empathy Gap.”

American Heritage Railways at ASLRRA
By Tad Dunville, Managing Director, Lifting Partners
The ASLRRA annual conference’ s focus is on“ short line” railroads, operations that are under a thousand miles long and are often started or operated by smaller businesses.
One such example came from American Heritage Railways, a heritage and tourist rail operator, which shared photos and details from a recent crane operation in one of the most remote towns in North America: Skagway, Alaska.
With no road access into or out of Skagway, American Heritage Railways barged in a crane from Seattle to complete the task of lifting a historic diesel and steam locomotive for transport. Once offloaded, the crane was used dockside to hoist the locomotive onto the barge.
The lift posed several challenges. There were no technical drawings available to confirm the locomotive’ s weight, balance points or proper pick locations. Additionally, the team had to factor in the unknown condition of the internal components, including any residual fluids or fuel that could shift unexpectedly during the lift.
Despite these unknowns, the crew executed a successful and stable lift, relying on experience and real-time adjustments to secure the load safely. The project underscored how mobile cranes continue to be indispensable in remote and logistically complex environments, especially when moving large, aging rail equipment where documentation is scarce and conditions are anything but predictable.
Mammoet Expands HVO Fuel Use in Canada
Mammoet announced it will begin using hydrotreated vegetable oil( HVO) fuel in Canada starting in the second quarter of 2025. The initiative is part of the company’ s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions in heavy lifting and transport operations.
HVO is a renewable diesel alternative made from vegetable oils and animal fats. According to Mammoet, it can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90 % compared to conventional diesel. The company plans to use HVO100, made entirely from renewable raw materials, where possible. It is compatible with most diesel engines and can be integrated immediately with existing fuel systems.
In Canada, the transition will be supported by upgrades to Mammoet’ s fueling infrastructure, including its network of fuel stations that service trucks, mobile cranes and self-propelled modular transporters( SPMTs). The company said this change will also enable it to offer lower-emission solutions to customers.
This initiative complements Mammoet’ s other sustainability investments, including electric-powered SPMTs and battery-operated ring cranes.
