Liebherr Cranes Aid Construction of Basel Transshipment Terminal
Rhenus Port Logistics is building a modern transshipment terminal at the Rhine port of Basel-Kleinhüningen in Switzerland. Emil Egger AG was tasked with the logistics for prefabricated concrete elements, deploying four Liebherr cranes— two LR crawler cranes and two LTM mobile cranes.
Covering 78,500 square feet and featuring five hall sections, terminal 4 includes five bridge cranes capable of lifting up to 32 metric tons. The terminal is equipped with excavators, forklifts, a rail intake hopper for bulk goods, and modern rail and truck scales for efficient transportation by road, rail and water. Large prefabricated concrete supports are essential for crane girders used to load and unload ships.
The site presented significant logistical challenges due to restricted access from neighboring buildings, the Rhine and the Südquaistrasse. Emil Egger AG managed these constraints using the LTM 1350-6.1 and LTM 1650-8.1 mobile cranes, along with the LR 1250 and LR 11000 crawler cranes. The LR 1250 handled 64-ton diagonal supports, stripping formwork and transporting them on-site. The LR 11000, Switzerland’ s largest crawler crane, installed crane track supports and external bone girders, moving supports weighing up to 292 metric tons.
Despite limited space, advanced processes enabled efficient ballast management. The VarioTray system proved invaluable, allowing for precise lifting and movement of supports. The LR 11000 also extended wall panels to their final height and installed 14 bone girders, each lift requiring meticulous planning due to space limitations.
The LTM 1350-6.1 lifted diagonal supports into place, while the LTM 1650-8.1 closed gaps in the concrete wall panels and installed the final bone girders. This involved lifting 99-metric-ton beams and repositioning the 715-metric-ton mobile crane after each installation.
