Bigfoot Crane’ s Liebherr 81 K. 1 Delivers Top Performance in Tight Spaces
A Liebherr 81 K. 1 fast-erecting crane demonstrated its exceptional capabilities on a complex construction site in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island. Supplied by Bigfoot Crane Company Inc., the 81 K. 1 played a crucial role in the development of an apartment complex near Departure Bay, overcoming significant challenges posed by limited space and a complex site layout.
Bigfoot Crane Company and contractor Westurban Developments Ltd. faced difficulties particularly during the crane’ s disassembly. Cale Anderson, managing director of Bigfoot Crane, explained,“ It’ s easy to get a crane onto site when there isn’ t a building yet. But additional challenges arise once the building is erected because of its structure. When we’ re planning a project, we always start by looking at how to remove the crane at the end.”
To address this, a large Liebherr mobile crane was employed to lift the 81 K. 1 over the new structure, setting it down on the other side. The task required a high degree of flexibility, technical skill and creative problem solving.“ As well as the challenges on site requiring the right equipment, we also needed a team willing to find creative and innovative solutions,” Anderson added.
The Liebherr crane’ s performance on a British Columbia construction site highlights the efficiency and versatility of modern crane technology. Anderson was particularly impressed with the 81 K. 1’ s features, including its 2-fall hoist rope and Load Plus function, which enables fast lifting speeds and the handling of heavy loads.“ Our customers especially appreciate the crane’ s speed and performance that these features make possible,” Anderson said.
The 81 K. 1 has proven beneficial for tasks such as trailer unloading, concrete work and rooftop equipment installation. With a maximum hook height of 127 feet and 7.9-foot tower sections, it effectively managed safety distances and coordination with other cranes on site, demonstrating its adaptability in various scenarios.

OZ Lifting Products LLC has introduced a new clamp designed for connecting hoists to mounting arms, offering a quick, easy, and safe solution for hanging electric chain or manual hoists under 0.5-ton capacity.
The hoist clamp can be mounted anywhere along the arm, supporting up to 1,000 pounds. It is available separately for users with existing mounting arms or can be purchased with pipe-mounted( model OBH230) or wall-mounted( OBH230-WALL) arms. Initially developed for construction sites with scaffolding, the OBH230 is sized for scaffolding pipes, while the OBH230- WALL has broader applications.
“ Our mounting arm is very popular, and we have received feedback on options to mount a hoist with a traditional top hook,” Richard Miller, sales manager at OZ Lifting, said.“ This led to the development of the hoist clamp, so once again it is an example of product innovation being driven by the point of use.”
