APM Terminals Orders 34 Electric RTG Cranes
APM Terminals Elizabeth has ordered 34 electric rubber-tired gantry( E-RTG) cranes from Konecranes as part of a broader modernization program at the Port of New York and New Jersey. The agreement also includes an option for six additional cranes.
The order was booked in the second quarter of 2026, with deliveries scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
Study Examines Certification’ s Role in Crane Safety
New research from the NCCCO Foundation and the National Safety Council’ s Work to Zero program examines the relationship between formal certification, workforce competency, jobsite safety, and performance in the crane industry.
The study, titled Certification in Crane Operations: Impacts on Safety and Performance, draws on existing research and an analysis of national fatality data to examine the effects of the 2010 OSHA Cranes and Derricks in Construction rule. Researchers also used survey data and interviews with crane personnel to provide additional context on how certification affects work in the field.
More than 90 % of survey respondents said certified personnel improve jobsite safety, technical competence, and overall career prospects. Nearly three-quarters of respondents also supported certification requirements for riggers and signalpersons, indicating support for standardized competency verification beyond crane operators.
The research found that certification provides the greatest safety benefits when combined with ongoing training, mentorship, and practical experience.
The NCCCO Foundation hosted a webinar on August 19, 2026, to discuss the research findings and recommendations, along with examples of how companies are using certification and training to improve safety results.

The E-RTGs will be deployed across the terminal yard for container handling operations.
The cranes are fully powered by onboard battery packs. According to the companies, the investment is intended to support yard capacity, operational reliability, and electrified terminal operations as APM Terminals Elizabeth prepares for future growth.
The order is part of APM Terminals Elizabeth’ s broader modernization program and is intended to prepare the terminal for future operational requirements.
The order is also part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting roadmap, which covers technologies intended to support the reduction of tailpipe emissions in port operations. The company’ s offerings include renewable diesel-powered drives, hybrid and fully electric fleets, and emerging hydrogen options.
Link-Belt TCC-2500 Supports Puerto Rico Flood Project
A Link-Belt Cranes TCC-2500 telecrawler is being used for foundation work on a $ 1.6 billion infrastructure project in Puerto Rico.
The crane is working for Ferrovial Construcción on the Río Puerto Nuevo Project, which was awarded by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Caribbean District. The project involves channel improvements along the Río Piedras River and is scheduled to be completed in multiple phases in the next decade.
The project is expected to provide long-term economic benefits, including an average of $ 126 million in annual savings from potential flood damage and support for more than 10,000 local jobs, according to the release.
The TCC-2500 is being used for foundation work that includes tandem lifting 50,000-pound drilled shaft rebar cages and installing sheet piling.
The crane was delivered to the project in April 2025 and has accumulated more than 2,500 hours of work, according to Ferrovial Construcción Project Manager Jorge Nogales.
The crane’ s telescopic boom is also being used for a range of lifting and material-handling operations on the project.
