Managing Modular Construction
For State Service, a contractor serving the energy sector based in Ingleside, Texas, Link-Belt Cranes are at the center of modular construction operations on an offshore drilling platform site. The fleet includes two 300-ton 348 Series 2, a 150- ton 238 HSL, and two 500-ton 548 lattice boom crawler cranes. Two TCC-800 Link-Belt teleboom crawlers are also in use on the jobsite. Together, the Link-Belt cranes are lifting steel components that are over 100 square feet by 10 feet high weighing up to 600 tons, raising them 50 feet over lower portions of the drill rig. When it comes to modular components, noted State Service Manager and Rigging Superintendent Thomas Angleman, reach is more important than capacity.
“ With this work, the footprint of the crane is critical,” Angleman said.“ Where modules are closer together, you can use a 100-ton to 300-ton crane rather than something bigger. The smaller crane usually is more maneuverable and quicker to get into more accessible locations around the site.”
For State Service’ s construction work at the site, liquified natural gas plant modules are usually 60 feet tall and vary from 120 to 200 feet long. They may also be 24 to 40 feet wide and need to maintain a separation on-site by as much as 15 feet.
Ted Little, maintenance supervisor at State Service, pointed out that the Link-Belt TCC-800 teleboom crawlers can scope and reach into the modules easily.“ They also move well through the yard,” he said.“ We do a lot of picking and carrying, and we run a lot of equipment from one end to the other over a 10-acre site.”
State Service operator Lance Jones noted that the 348 Series 2 lattice crawler crane is a great fit for modular lifts at the offshore site.“ They can pick everything that we have out here with ease, and fit into tight spaces,” he said.
“ The 238 HSL is especially superb for pick and carry work,” Jones added.“ The heaviest pick and carry load weighed about 70,000 pounds, and the crane performed exceptionally when lifting a 65,000-pound, 80-foot-long heavy-duty pipe joint.”
