PTC-35 Handles Heavy Work at Bruce Power
At Ontario’ s Bruce Power nuclear generating station, one of Mammoet’ s largest lifting systems returned to the jobsite to continue a major life-extension project designed to keep the facility operating for decades to come.
The work centered on Unit 4 at the Bruce A station, where crews began replacing massive reactor components as part of Bruce Power’ s Major Component Replacement( MCR) program. The multiyear effort, underway since 2020, includes replacing major components across six reactor units at the Bruce A and Bruce B stations.
To perform the work, Mammoet deployed its 1,600-ton-capacity PTC-35 ring crane along with jack-andslide systems and self-propelled modular transporters. The crane was used to relocate two steam drums and exchange eight steam generators during a process expected to take about six months.
The company previously supported similar work at Unit 3 in 2024 before returning to the Ontario site for the next phase of the project.
“ A crawler crane of similar capacity would require a big counterweight,

which would need to be continually picked up and set back down,” said Gord Gilchrist, business development director at Mammoet.
“ Not only does this add risk, but it takes up more time and room. The other advantage of the PTC is that it can stand tall in extreme weather using a storm anchor.
“ This is key because the site can see very heavy wind conditions. If you were to use a crawler, the high winds could mean having to down boom.”
In addition to the ring crane, Mammoet used self-propelled modular transporters to move retired steam generators into long-term storage.
Bruce Power officials said the specialized equipment and engineering support remained an important part of the refurbishment effort.
“ Mammoet continues to help us safely execute our MCR projects that will extend the life of Bruce Power for decades to come,” said Rob Hoare, vice president, MCR Execution.
“ From its specialist equipment that has made these efficient exchanges fast, efficient and safe, to its engineering support, Mammoet has been a critical partner for the success of the project”.
NCCCO Foundation Launches Crane Career Advisors Program
The NCCCO Foundation has introduced a new workforce initiative designed to connect job seekers with professionals in the crane industry. The Crane Career Advisors program aims to provide guidance to individuals interested in pursuing careers in crane operations and related fields.
The program is part of the foundation’ s broader effort to raise awareness about career opportunities in the crane sector. The initiative will pair individuals exploring crane careers with experienced industry professionals who can answer questions and share insights about entering and working in the field.
The program builds on the foundation’ s existing outreach efforts, including its My Crane Career website, which serves as a resource hub for those exploring crane industry jobs. Through the new advisory program, participants can request to connect directly with industry professionals for guidance on career pathways, training and day-to-day expectations.
Individuals interested in participating are encouraged to submit a request through the My Crane Career website. The program is positioned as an additional resource to help address workforce awareness and provide clearer entry points into the crane and lifting industry.
