NessCampbell’ s new Grove GMK6450-1 played key role in assembling a massive towboat in Seattle.
NessCampbell Tackles Towboat Assembly in Crowded Shipyard
NessCampbell Crane + Rigging recently tackled a major project at Western Towboat’ s Seattle facility, assembling a massive new towboat. At the heart of this operation was the challenge of lifting and positioning some heavy, complex components in a tight, busy shipyard.
A 500-ton Grove GMK6450-1 all-terrain crane, NessCampbell’ s latest acquisition and the first of its kind in North America, played a central role in the complex assembly process alongside Western Towboat’ s Manitowoc 3900 crawler crane.
The first task was to rig and lift the 135,000-pound hull, a critical step that required precise control and stability. Once it was carefully lifted and rotated into place, the team switched gears to tackle the next major lift— the 58,000-pound towboat house. This operation required careful planning and coordination to ensure the hull and house aligned perfectly.
Throughout the project, NessCampbell’ s skilled crew worked closely with Western Towboat’ s team, overcoming challenges like tight space constraints and Seattle’ s unpredictable weather. Wind speeds were monitored closely, and with the precision of their planning, the lifts were executed smoothly and without issue.
“ Bringing the 500-USt GMK6450-1 into a crowded shipyard was no small feat,” said Josh Buege, NessCampbell’ s project manager for the towboat assembly.“ We tackled site logistics challenges by conducting slope and ground stability assessments to keep everything secure.”
This project not only highlights NessCampbell’ s expertise in crane operations but also demonstrates their ability to handle complex, large-scale projects with precision and safety— ensuring that Western Towboat’ s new vessel was assembled and secured without a hitch.
“ Having the new Grove GMK6450-1 was crucial for this project. It allowed us to lift heavy components with the reliability and precision we require,” Buege added.“ Our highly trained team, coupled with this outstanding crane, guaranteed a safe and smooth assembly process for Western Towboat.”
