NSC and NCCCO Foundation Release Report on Rising Heat Risks in Crane Industry
With extreme temperatures posing an increasing threat to outdoor workers, the National Safety Council( NSC), in partnership with the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators( NCCCO) Foundation, has released a new report focused on protecting crane workers from heat-related hazards. The report,“ Addressing Heat Stress in the Crane Industry,” is part of the NSC’ s Work to Zero initiative and outlines strategies to reduce the risk of heat stress and related injuries in crane operations.
According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics, heat exposure claimed the lives of 55 workers across all industries in 2023. In 2021 and 2022, nearly 5,000 workers suffered heat-related injuries or illnesses that resulted in missed workdays. The new NSC and NCCCO Foundation report aims to mitigate these incidents by offering targeted recommendations tailored to the crane sector.
The report emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach that includes environmental monitoring, clearly defined heat safety policies and adjustments to work practices. It also stresses the importance of educating workers about individual risk factors such as hydration, medical history and substance use. Additionally, the report highlights how wearable devices and lone worker technologies can support real-time hazard monitoring and alerts.
A 2023 survey conducted by Work to Zero and the NCCCO Foundation, which gathered responses from more than 2,000 crane personnel, revealed that 75 % of participants felt“ likely” or“ very likely” to experience heat stress or illness on the job. Respondents cited heat stress as the leading contributor to both personal injuries and those sustained by coworkers.
To support the release of the report, the NCCCO Foundation hosted a webinar on July 9, 2025, featuring experts from NSC and the crane safety field. The session explored findings from the report
Felling Trailers Backs Ivy’ s Legacy with Charity Trailer Auction
Felling Trailers, Inc. announced that Ivy’ s Legacy Foundation has been selected as the beneficiary of its 2025“ Trailer for a Cause” online auction. The event, now in its 13th year, features a custom FT‐3 utility trailer, with the entire winning bid donated to the chosen nonprofit.
Over the past 13 years, the program has raised more than $ 51,000 for organizations such as American Cranes and Transport on ALZ-Alzheimer’ s, Lymphoma Research Foundation, Minnesota Fire Fighters Foundation, Eagle’ s Healing Nest and Backing the Blue. The initiative aims to spotlight impactful nonprofits while supporting their essential work.
The beneficiary for 2025 was selected by Felling Trailers employees through a vote, with Ivy’ s Legacy Foundation receiving the majority. Ivy’ s Legacy, based in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, provides support to families in crisis through financial aid for medical bills and funerals, grieving and chemo baskets and memorial services— all operated by volunteers.
Preparations are underway for a late fall 2025 auction, during which Felling Trailers will work alongside Ivy’ s Legacy to raise awareness and highlight the foundation’ s impact across Central Minnesota and beyond.
and offered guidance on how to manage heat hazards in crane operations.
This marks the fourth collaborative resource between NSC’ s Work to Zero initiative and the NCCCO Foundation. The Work to Zero program, funded by the McElhattan Foundation, focuses on eliminating workplace fatalities through technology-driven safety solutions. CM Labs To Present Overhead & Underground Training Simulations
CM Labs Simulation announced its Intellia Intelligent Training System will debut at Utility Expo 2025 in Louisville, Kentucky, October 7 – 9. The highlight is an enhanced training suite for overhead line work— showcased alongside an underground operations simulator— demonstrating progress in heavy equipment operator training.
The new simulation packs, hosted at booth S4020, mirror real-world challenges crews face across utility sites. The overhead operations station features a digger derrick simulator, along with progressive training scenarios for working near power lines. The underground operations station focuses on safe task execution around buried lines and infrastructure.
CM Labs’ Intellia-powered hardware integrates OEM-grade control systems and centralized analytics, delivering detailed trainee performance insights and real-time error tracking. The platform is designed to ensure crews are well-prepared for the demands of utility construction and maintenance.
These simulation advances can be explored at booth S4020 during Utility Expo 2025.
