Bigge Expands Fleet with New SANY Crane Partnership
The Potain Hup 40-30 self-erecting crane lifts steel beams in tight quarters on Newbury Street, Boston.
Electric Crane Navigates Tight Quarters in Boston
On Newbury Street in Boston, construction crews faced a familiar urban challenge: erecting steel in a location where space was at a premium and every maneuver had to be precise.
MAS Building and Bridge, working with equipment from Shawmut Equipment, relied on a self-erecting Potain Hup 40-30 to meet the site’ s tight requirements.
“ This machine has been very vital to the success of this job just due to the tight proximity of the location that we’ re at,” said Andrew Gallagher, a foreman with MAS Building and Bridge.
The project required navigating buildings on all sides, limiting a full 360-degree crane swing. To overcome this, the team configured the Hup 40-30 with a three-part jib. The setup allowed crews to unload steel in a“ single part” configuration without hitting surrounding structures, extend the reach with two additional jibs to access the far end of the building and assist other trades across the project site.
The crane’ s electric operation added another layer of practicality. Without a diesel engine, the Hup 40-30 ran quietly, reducing noise in Boston’ s Back Bay neighborhood. Its dual-battery system allowed work to continue through freezing temperatures; one battery powered the crane while the other remained in a heated compartment to maintain charge, minimizing downtime.
Although this was one of the first steel erection projects for MAS Building and Bridge using this machine, the results impressed the crew and opened possibilities for future urban jobs.
The team also noted the cooperation of property owners, who provided access to the constrained site, allowing the project to progress efficiently despite the dense surroundings.
Bigge Crane and Rigging Co. announced a new partnership with SANY to serve as the master distributor of SANY cranes in the U. S. The move comes as the company seeks to expand its fleet and meet rising demand in a tight crane market.
Bigge currently operates 50 SANY cranes, including rough terrain, telescopic crawler and lattice crawler models, and plans to continue adding to its inventory. Operators have reported strong satisfaction with the cranes, citing practical benefits in everyday use. The partnership leverages Bigge’ s more than 110 years of experience in the crane industry.
The SANY lineup includes technical features aimed at improving efficiency and reducing costs. An auxiliary power unit reduces engine idle hours by up to 80 %, lowering fuel use and emissions. All SANY cranes come with a three-year, 3,000-hour warranty and a five-year unlimited-hour powertrain warranty.

Roen Takes Delivery of Lampson Millennium
Roen Salvage Company, based in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, is set to take delivery of a Lampson Millennium 4100 crawler crane, which was on display just outside the CONEXPO-CON / AGG 2026 grounds for demonstrations. The Millennium 4100 SII builds on the classic 4100 platform with updated engines, controls and systems, providing modern performance while retaining the proven structural design.
The crane has a maximum capacity of
230 tons, with main and auxiliary drum line pulls of 55,000 pounds each. The main boom can extend up to 260 feet, and when combined with a jib, the crane reaches a total length of 230 feet with a 60-foot jib. Main and auxiliary drums accommodate up to 2,200 feet of 1-1 / 8-inch or 1,800 feet of 1-1 / 4-inch wire rope, supporting tandem drum operation for complex lifts.
The Millennium 4100 accepts Manitowoc ringer and tower attachments without modification and offers luffing jibs,
MAXER attachments, wind attachments and custom project-specific options. The crane meets FedOSHA requirements for man basket suspension and does not have freefall capability.
